The Ghost Town of North Georgia, Scull Shoals Mill Village. This little town was settled in 1784 along the Oconee River in Greene County, GA and was once a thriving industrial village with sawmills, grist mills, one of Georgia’s first paper mills, and a four-story textile mill that employed over 600 people. A historic flood in 1887 destroyed most of the mills and covered the entire town for a number of days leaving it in physical and economic ruin and eventually leading to it being abandoned by the folks who called it home. Today, you can explore remnants of the town including mill foundations, chimneys, brick structures, an old arched bridge and more…all now being slowly reclaimed by nature.
You’ll find the Ghost Town of Scull Shoals located within the Oconee National Forest near the Oconee River Campground. If you wish to drive up to the site from Greensboro, take HWY 15N and make a right on Macedonia Road then turn left at the sign for Scull Shoals. You will drive down a dirt road for about 10 minutes before reaching the site.
